Extrusion
Elmet Technologies, Coldwater, MI, facility operates one of the most advanced extrusion systems in the world, featuring state-of-the-art computerized controls and precision hydraulics. Our 5,000 metric ton (5,500 ton) extrusion press is capable of processing speeds from 0.01” to 12” per second, ensuring exceptional precision, scalability, and customization to meet diverse client needs. This cutting-edge system allows us to serve industries worldwide, producing extrusions with diameters ranging from 152-457 mm (6-18 inches). Our advanced process involves preheating billets up to 1925°C (3500°F) using gas-fired or inert atmosphere induction furnaces, coupled with precise ram speed control for maximum flexibility.

With this innovative technology, we efficiently process a wide range of materials, including copper alloys, stainless steels, nickel-based alloys, titanium, refractory metals, and aluminum metal matrix composites, as well as composite billets. Using custom-designed dies, we transform these materials into long, straight, semi-finished rods, tubes, and complex cross-sections, delivering high-quality extrusions tailored to our clients’ unique specifications.

Our Extrusion Process

*After preheating, depending on the material being used, we can also do induction heat before then loading into the press.
Extrusion press Efficient Equipment
Our 5500-ton extrusion press facility includes two large 1000 – 2400 degrees Fahrenheit billet heating furnaces with oxidizing or reducing atmosphere versatility and fast lateral transfer systems, with a separate pusher block heating furnace.
An overhead crane with a capacity of 15 tons operates the full length of the facility for ready product handling.

Benefits of Extrusion
- Extrudes near-net shapes and pipes, reducing machining costs and improving material yields.
- Current welded or rolled parts to benefit from the solid, seamless, and near-net change in the process.
- Specialty metals and alloys include titanium, molybdenum, tantalum, niobium, and other metals for large applications.
- Provide extruded products, such as pipes and shapes, in many ferrous and nonferrous metals.
- Produce extruded pipe with a flange.
